A bakehouse the family took on
John and Nancy McKearny first put the idea on paper in 1996. The family took the bakehouse over in 2002, and it has been theirs since.
1996 → today
Twenty-two years on Oracle Road.
The idea for the bakehouse was written down in 1996. Six years later the McKearny family took it on, and the ovens at 7882 N. Oracle Rd. have been running for the neighbourhood ever since.
That is more than two decades of early mornings, bread racks and cake boxes — and, on the evidence of the counter, a lot of people in Oro Valley who know exactly what time the first loaves come out.
Dates and the “more than 22 years” figure are as published by the bakehouse itself.
How it is made
In this kitchen, by these hands.
Bread, muffins, pastries, pies, specialty desserts and celebration cakes all come out of one kitchen. There is no production line and no delivery van arriving before dawn — the case is stocked by the people you see behind it.
It also means the selection is honest. When something has sold out, it has sold out, and what replaces it depends on what the day called for.
Since 2002
Same road, same family, same ovens.
The mark
A sign that has been there a while.
The bakehouse mark is a woodcut — heavy condensed letters, a little bakery building, and two bakers' hats on the roof. It has the look of something cut for a shopfront rather than designed for a screen, which is exactly why we kept it at the centre of this site.
The colours on this site are taken from it: the dark green ink, the cream of the paper, and the crust brown of the bread.
